Michigan Small Game Species

In Michigan, a 2012-2013 small game license allows hunting of the following species (click on species for season, bag limits, species profile):

Rabbit & hare
Fox squirrel & gray squirrel, 
Pheasant (male only)
Ruffed grouse & sharp-tailed grouse
Woodcock (HIP migratory bird endorsement required)
Quail
Crow
Coyote (Michigan residents only)
Waterfowl (requires a federal waterfowl stamp and Michigan waterfowl hunting license, if age 16 or older)

Year-round Species

(valid hunting license still required)

Opossum
Porcupine
Weasel
Red squirrel
Skunk
Ground squirrel
Woodchuck

No license is required for Michigan resident, resident's spouse or resident's children to hunt small game on the enclosed farmlands where they live, except a federal waterfowl stamp and state waterfowl license are required to hunt waterfowl.

Hunting Hours

In Michigan, hunting hours for small game are one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources offers a table for the easternmost portion of the state with exact times for every day between September and December. It also offers a a map showing how much time must be added to compensate for later sunrise/sunset times farther west across the state.
